Night Shines

The darkness of this night
Shines brighter than any day dream.
Frozen fires replaced pastel skies;
And the still, hollow eyes of coyotes
Stare back at me from a star-filled expanse.
I loved the daylight once,
But it holds no room for mystery,
Nor the contagious desire that perfumes a moon-lit scene.
The world becomes too obvious,
With everything illuminated.
I prefer to see the world in parts-
And for other parts, to stay concealed.
For it is the concealment that
Entices me, invites me to
Fill in dark shapes
With curiosity,
And not have simple
Explanations handed to me,
Like elementary assignments.
I find the truth in things that don’t speak too loudly,
in the abbreviated lights of stars
As they cast their torches into the night.
